Japan Announces Nippon Anime Awards, First Ceremony Scheduled for November 2027: Japan is preparing to introduce a new international anime awards platform, with the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) announcing the Nippon Anime Awards. The inaugural ceremony is scheduled for November 21, 2027, at SGC Hall Ariake in Tokyo.
The announcement was made on November 2, 2026, during the closing programme of Tokyo Anime Next, held at Tokyo Tatemono Brillia Hall. AJA President Kazuko Ishikawa unveiled the awards’ name and slogan: “Moving Frames. Moving Hearts. Moving the World” at the Tokyo Anime Next, a programme of screenings, workshops and live shows that ran Oct. 30–Nov. 2.
The new awards aim to recognise outstanding Japanese anime productions and celebrate the creative professionals responsible for bringing animated stories to audiences. The initiative also seeks to strengthen anime’s international presence and establish an awards platform representing Japan’s animation industry.
Focus on Global Recognition and Industry Development
The Nippon Anime Awards will recognise achievements across Japanese animation while promoting the industry’s creative and commercial potential.
The initiative will include programmes developed in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to create new business opportunities for animation companies and support the development of emerging talent.
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike also expressed the metropolitan government’s continued commitment to supporting anime and the professionals working across the industry.
The organisers have described their ambition as creating a lasting awards platform that celebrates Japanese animation and connects with audiences both domestically and internationally.
Tokyo Anime Next Celebrates Japanese Animation
The awards announcement followed four days of Tokyo Anime Next programming, which included screenings, workshops, industry discussions and live performances.
One of the main attractions was an orchestral presentation featuring the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and music associated with popular anime franchises, including Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Attack on Titan and Detective Conan.
Performers included Nami Nakagawa, Ai Higuchi and Mai Kuraki, who presented music from the respective productions.
The programme also featured screenings of 14 anime titles, production workshops and the world premiere of the first episode of LONA, a television anime created by screenwriter Akiko Nogi and WIT Studio.
Industry professionals also participated in animation production classes, while a special session explored a Japan-Saudi Arabia animation co-production.
A New Chapter for Japan’s Anime Industry
The launch of the Nippon Anime Awards comes as Japanese animation continues to expand its international audience through theatrical releases, streaming platforms, merchandise, music and international collaborations.
By combining creative recognition with industry development and talent initiatives, the new awards aim to establish a platform that supports both established professionals and the next generation of animation creators.
With its first ceremony scheduled for November 21, 2027, the Nippon Anime Awards will become a new event to watch on Japan’s animation calendar.
