Japan’s Anime Industry Hits Record $28.2 Billion as Global Demand Drives Growth: Japan’s anime industry recorded 15.8% growth in 2025, reaching JPY 4.45 trillion ($28.2 billion), with overseas markets contributing 57.1% of total revenue.

Japan’s anime industry has reached a record market value of JPY 4.45 trillion (approximately $28.2 billion) in 2025, driven by growing international demand for Japanese animation, streaming content, merchandise and licensing.

According to preliminary figures released by the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA), the industry grew 15.8% compared with the previous year. The findings were presented by Masahiro Hasegawa, editor-in-chief of the AJA’s annual Anime Industry Report, at Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFFCOM). The final figures are expected to be published in the Association of Japanese Animations’ 2026 Anime Industry Report in December.

Overseas Markets Lead Industry Growth

International revenue increased 17.2% to JPY 2.54 trillion (approximately $16.1 billion), accounting for 57.1% of total industry spending.

Japan’s domestic market also recorded growth of 14.1%, reaching JPY 1.91 trillion (approximately $12.1 billion).

Overseas spending has exceeded domestic revenue since 2023, highlighting the growing international popularity of Japanese anime.

Animation Studios Report Revenue Growth

Revenue generated directly by Japanese animation studios increased 8.4% to JPY 505.5 billion (approximately $3.2 billion) in 2025.

Overseas business contributed 27.9% of studio revenue, compared with 25.5% in 2024.

The broader anime industry generates revenue through multiple channels, including streaming, theatrical releases, television distribution, merchandise, music, gaming and intellectual property licensing.

Global Business Opportunities

The industry’s expansion is creating opportunities for international streaming platforms, distributors, advertisers, merchandise manufacturers, gaming companies and event organisers.

For businesses in India and other international markets, Japanese anime presents opportunities in content distribution, licensing, animation production, merchandising and fan events.

The preliminary figures demonstrate how anime has evolved into a major international entertainment business, with overseas audiences playing an increasingly important role in its growth.
