Westbrook Studios and Malar Group Launch ‘215,’ Exploring the Rise of DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince: Westbrook Studios and Canada’s Malar Group have announced a new partnership to finance and develop a slate of film and television projects, with “215” as the first project under the collaboration. The scripted series will explore the early life of Will Smith and his rise alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff in Philadelphia’s late-1980s hip-hop scene.
Set in West Philadelphia, “215” will follow a quick-witted teenage rapper, his DJ and musical partner, and the friends who help fuel their ambitions as they attempt to build careers in a rapidly evolving hip-hop community.
The series takes its title from Philadelphia’s 215 telephone area code and will dramatize the period before Smith became a global Hollywood star and the lead of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
The Story Behind the Fresh Prince
“215” will focus on the friendship, ambition and struggles that shaped Smith and Jeffrey Townes, better known as DJ Jazzy Jeff, as they pursued record deals, money and a way beyond their West Philadelphia neighborhood.
The series will also explore the friendships and community surrounding the pair as Philadelphia’s hip-hop culture developed into a force capable of reaching audiences around the world.
Westbrook Studios President of Television Terence Carter said the project is particularly meaningful because it draws from the rise of DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince while celebrating Philadelphia during a defining period in the city’s late-1980s and early-1990s hip-hop history.
From Philadelphia to Global Fame
Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff became one of hip-hop’s earliest crossover success stories. Their partnership produced major hits including “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” and in 1989 they won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance, becoming historic figures in the genre.
Smith’s career subsequently expanded into television and film, with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air becoming a cultural phenomenon after its 1990 debut. DJ Jazzy Jeff also appeared as Jazz, Smith’s friend, throughout the sitcom’s run.
The new series will return to the years before that television success, examining how two young Philadelphia artists helped take hip-hop from local block parties toward the mainstream.
Westbrook and Malar Build a New Content Slate
“215” is the first project emerging from the broader partnership between Westbrook Studios and The Malar Group.
Malar Group CEO Sayan Navaratnam described “215” as an untold origin story centered on two people who believed in one another, overcame significant obstacles and built a partnership that endured for decades.
The collaboration will extend beyond “215,” with the two companies planning to develop additional film and television projects as part of a broader content slate.
Westbrook Studios’ upcoming projects include Night of the Living Dead, Fast & Loose and I Am Legend 2. Its television portfolio includes Bel-Air, Red Table Talk, Cobra Kai and Pole to Pole.
A Philadelphia Hip-Hop Time Capsule
The announcement has generated interest because “215” offers an opportunity to revisit a pivotal period in American music through the experiences of two artists who helped bridge hip-hop and mainstream popular culture.
Rather than beginning with Smith’s Hollywood success, the series will concentrate on the Philadelphia roots, relationships and creative ambitions that preceded it.
No cast, streaming platform, production date or premiere date has yet been announced. The project is currently in development.
For Westbrook Studios and Malar Group, “215” represents the beginning of a larger creative partnership. For audiences, it promises a behind-the-scenes dramatic look at the origins of DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince and the Philadelphia community that helped launch one of hip-hop’s most enduring partnerships.
